While we’ll never know why this isn’t just integrated into the OS, Microsoft has finally released a Bing Wallpaper app for Windows 10. To the web, not to the Microsoft Store.
“We just shipped an officially supported way to set the Bing homepage image as your desktop wallpaper on Windows,” Microsoft’s Michael Schechter tweeted in what I have to say is the least accessible way to announce anything ever.
As you should have expected several years ago, the Bing Wallpaper app delivers the Bing image of the day—arguably the single best feature of Microsoft’s web search engine—to your desktop.
“Bing Wallpaper includes a collection of beautiful images from around the world that have been featured on the Bing homepage,” the website for the app explains. “Not only will you see a new image on your desktop each day, but you can also browse images and learn where they’re from.”
Microsoft being Microsoft, this app also provides a gross bit of cross-promotion and asks you to set Bing as your browser homepage and default search engine on install, like it’s 1999 again. Which, frankly, is when this app should have first appeared. And you will, of course, have to deal with a Bing logo on your desktop no matter what you choose there. But the images are nice, and it may be worth it.
