Brad Pitt’s Low Bun Was an Oscar Scene-Stealer

hile introducing the hair and makeup category at Sunday night’s Oscars, Don Cheadle said, in effect, that if the actor’s hair is incorrect in any way that’s all an audience will see. But this principle also works in reverse. If your hair is so correct and so right, then that is all anyone will notice. See: Brad Pitt’s messy bun. Eat your heart out, Meghan Markle.

Pitt, the man, and his tiny bun, the legend, presented best supporting actress at last night’s Oscars. Now of course, this is not all audiences noticed about Pitt. They noticed that he got to give the award to Yuh-Jung Youn, the number one scene-stealer in a film he executive produced, Minari.

Youn also managed to steal the entire Oscars. “Mr. Brad Pitt, finally. Nice to meet you,” she said to him. “Where were you when we were filming?” And then backstage, when someone asked what Pitt smelled like, she reportedly said she didn’t smell him because she’s “not a dog.” And finally, in a night of coups for the South Korean actor, here’s a nice picture of her with fellow treasures who won in their categoriesFrances McDormand and Daniel Kaluuya.

But this is about Brad! Brad and his hairs all collected in a bun. The best-supporting character to Youn’s win, really. The look is a very correct nod to the pandemic, when one can get away with fewer haircuts. But it’s so healthy-looking? Like he doesn’t experience stress? Everyone else’s hair is falling out, and Brad is over here with strands to spare.

The low bun has the luster of a guy who gets his omega-3s in. The shine of a 2000s-era Pantene commercial. The swoop that says, “Who me? Afraid of a little product? Yeah right.” It is awards show in the front, and L.A. dad in the back—a new, welcome kind of mullet.
