May is a great time to get to know Michigan’s Asian population.
A good place to start is the Detroit Institute of Arts, which will be honoring May’s Asian Pacific American Month with online and in-person programs including music, dance, film, art talks, puppet shows and more.
“May is a time for our nation to honor and recognize the contributions of Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders,” says Mai Xiong of Warren and the first Asian-American of Hmong descent elected to the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. “This past year has been extremely challenging for so many, but for the Asian-American community, hate crimes and racism has persisted and risen in alarming numbers. Despite these challenges, our community continues to persevere. I am very pleased that the DIA will be highlighting a diverse blend of traditional and contemporary performances this month.”
These virtual events and activities throughout May are free unless noted otherwise.
